Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia

Introduction

The 1st Cavalry Division, a major subordinate command of the US Third Mobile Armored Corps, is a 19,000 soldier, heavy armored division stationed at Ft. Hood, TX. As one of the two "on-call" heavy contingency force divisions of the Army, the First Team has an on-order mission to deploy by sea, air or land to any part of the world on a short notice. The following narratives, divided in timeline eras of major operational missions, describes the threat environment, tactical conditions, evolution of equipment technology and the strategic methodology employed by one of its command units, the 5th Brigade Combat Team and its Subordinate Units, to contribute to the successful mission enhancement of the warring organization of the 1st Cavalry Division and the honors they achieved are summarized in the chapters that follow.

Mission:

The mission of the 515th Fowrard Support Battalion is to provide logistics support for the 5th Brigade Combat Team. On order, deploys to the designated Area of Operations and conducts support operations for the Brigade.

Organizational Summary:

On 14 January 2004 the 515th Brigade Support Battalion; was constituted in the Regular Army of the United States, asssigned to the 1st Cavalry Division and activated at Fort Hood, Texas. to serve as the provisional battalion in support of the newly structured 5th Brigade Combat Team composed of dismounted or mechanized patrols of Division Artillery elements ahat will be deployed to Iraq in the near future.

In 2004, the battalion deployed to Iraq as part of 5th Brigade Combat Tream, 1st Cavalry Division in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II. The battalion successfully completed its mission and redeployed back to Fort Hood in early 2005.

Although the battalion is youngest in its history, its Soldiers have served around the world in both peace and war and it already has a proud tradition. Soldiers assigned to the battalion have proven top in their profession, winning prestigious unit awards and providing uninterrupted support to the 5th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. These Soldiers are the most precious resource of our Army and their decisive, hard performance is deserving of the motto of the unit - "FORGE THE EDGE".
