Note 1:
David L. Terrill, of Scottish decent, was born in the Atlantic Ocean on a ship (the Highland Mary) which had embarked to America. The vessel was wrecked off the coast of Massachusetts. He, being the only survivor, was cared for and raised by Dr. Terrill who gave him his name.

In later years David Terrill served in the First and Fifth Iowa Regiments until the close of Civil War, being wounded 4 times. Major campaigns engaged in were Wilson Creek, Springfield Creek, Champion Hills, Missionary Ridge and Jackson Mississippi.
