Introduction

The units comprised of the 1st Cavalry Division Direct Support Units are a composite sub set of operating elements of the Division. Specifically each of the units; 1) the 9th Air Support Operations, a subordinate unit of the 3rd Air Support Group, 8th Air Force 2) the 15th Financial Support Battalion, a subordinate unit of the 13th Finance Group, 13th Corps Support Group and 3) the 15th Personnel Service Battalion, a subordinate unit of the 3rd Personnel Group, 13th Corps Support Group has a unique mission which compliments, supports and coordinates functional activities of the Corps to allow the application to be carried out independently of each other or any other of the subordinate command Units of the division. Personnel and equipment of each unit of the Direct Support activities is stationed at Fort Hood, Texas as part of the U.S. Third Mobile Armored Corps.

The concept of "Direct Support" began during the Vietnam War. allowing the 1st Cavalry Division Commander to have direct control over a broad range of operational specialization and capability in order to carry out its mission. The current organizational mix of the Direct Support Units is the combination of the experience and operational training developed in conjunction with the long history and needs of the 1st Cavalry Division. Highlights of the many historical significant accomplishments of the Direct Support Units and the honors they have earned are summarized in the chapters that follow:
