On 16 August 1996, the 615th Support Battalion (AVN) was constituted in the Regular Army and assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas. The 615th is the first of its kind serving in the 1st Cavalry Division. The Headquarters and Supply Company was forged from assets taken from throughout the Division Support Command.

The 615th Support Battalion, consisting of a Headquarters and Supply Company, "A" Company (AIM) and "B" Company (GMSSA) forms a unique support group with tailored functions to support the Cavalry Aviation Brigade.

In the formation of the Battalion, "A" Company has absorbed the rich history and honor of the troopers assigned to "F" Company, 227th Aviation Regiment (AIM) who retired their colors, closing a chapter on the proud heritage they have developed since 1963. "B" Company, 615th Support Battalion (Ground Maintenance Company and Supply Activities) was formed by the redesignation of "C" Company, 27th Support Battalion (MAIN)

Since its organization the Battalion has provided unyielding support to the units of the 4th Brigade and was instrumental in the mass modernization of the 4th Brigade by fielding the AH-64 Longbow Apaches, OH-58D Kiowa Warriors, M1A2 Abrams Tanks, M88A2 Hercules Recovery Vehicles, M3A2 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, the new contact trucks, and by implementing the new Standard Army Management Information System (STAMIS) equipment.

The Battalion has participated in numerous deployments and National Training Center Rotations. In 1997 the 615th ASB sent elements forward to the Middle East in support of Intrinsic Action. During 1998 and 1999 the entire Battalion deployed to Bosnia in support of Operation Joint Forge as part of the NATO Stabilization Force 4 and 5. Additionally this battalion has participated in several warfighter exercises using state of the art technology to fight and win against computer generated opposition.

Although the Battalion is young, the soldiers have proven, time and time again, that they are the most precious of resources of this battalion and the 1st Cavalry Division.
