"Valkyrie Warriors ride above the battlefields of the earth."

The Valkyries were the beautiful, fearless, immortal and winged handmaiden warriors of Odin, God of War, who rode their horses across the skies above the battlefields of the earth. They carried out the will of Odin to determine the victors and in gathering the souls of dying warriors who had fought valiantly and found deserving of afterlife in Valhalla.

The best known of the Valkyries was Brynhild, who forfeited her immortality by saving the life of Agnar, a young hero who had been fated to die.

Introduction

The Aviation Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division is a subordinate command of the 1st Cavalry Division, a heavily armored division stationed at Fort Hood, Texas as part of the U.S. Third Mobile Armored Corps. The history of the Aviation Brigade can be traced back to 01 September 1984, when it was constituted in the Regular Army as Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Cavalry Division and activated at Fort Hood, Texas. At that time the brigade was composed of the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, the 227th Aviation Battalion and the 228th Attack Helicopter Battalion.

The current capability of the Aviation Brigade has been developed in conjunction with the long history and needs of the 1st Cavalry Division. It is the combination of the experienced training received by each dedicated member of the Team and adherence to the performance level and traditions of the past.

As an element of the two "on-call" heavy contingency force divisions of the Army, the Aviation Brigade composed of the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment; 1st and 2nd Battalions, 227th Aviation Regiment and its Tactical Air Traffic Service Company, "F" Company, 1st Battalion, 58th Aviation Regiment has an on-order mission to deploy by sea, air or land to any part of the world on a short notice and once engaged with the threat; to destroy, neutralize, or suppress the enemy. Highlights of the many historical critical missions performed by members of the Aviation Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division and the honors they achieved are summarized in the chapters that follow:
