The history of the 2nd Brigade can be traced back to 29 August 1917, when it
was constituted in the Regular Army as Headquarters, 2nd Cavalry Brigade. On
27 December 1917, it was organized and assigned to the 15th Cavalry Division
at Fort Bliss, Texas. The initial WW-I wartime service of the Brigade was
patrolling the Mexican Border, until 12 May 1918 when it was relieved from the
15th Cavalry Division and demobilized on 09 July 1919, at Fort Bliss,
Texas.
On 22 January 1921 the 1st Cavalry Division was constituted in the US Regular
Army. On 13 September 1921, with the initiation of the National Defense Act,
the 1st Cavalry Division was formally activated at Ft. Bliss, TX and Major
General Robert Lee Howze, a Texas native from Rusk County and seasoned veteran
of then Frontier Indian Wars, Spanish American War, Philippines Insurrection,
Mexican Expedition, World War I and recipient of the Medal of Honor, was
selected as its first Division Commander.
On 20 August 1921, the Brigade became a member of the 1st Cavalry Division
as the Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 2nd Cavalry Brigade. At that time,
subordinate units consisted of the 2nd Machine Gun Squadron, 7th Cavalry
Regiment and 8th Cavalry Regiment. In 1963, the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry
Regiment was assigned to the 2nd Brigade, followed by the 2nd Battalion, 12th
Cavalry Regiment in 1965. The 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment joined the
Brigade in 1987.
On 20 September, 2002 the 1st Cavalry Division unfurled the guidon of the unit
that become the second element representing the beginning of the change over
of the Division organization to the FORCE XXI configuration, "D" Troop, 9th
Cavalry Regiment, 2nd "BlackJack" Brigade. In addition to the process
of reactivating "D" Troop, the Division restored the organizational continuity
of a piece of its history. In the post Vietnam War era, on 21 July 1975, the
4th Squadron, 9th Cavalry, which had been redesignated as a lineage unit of
"D" Troop, was relieved from assignment to the 1st Cavalry Division.
As of today, the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division is functionally
organized and represented by the following active subordinate units:

Today, the soldiers of the BLACKJACK Brigade Combat Team stand ready to answer
an on-order mission to deploy by sea, air or land to any part of the world on
short notice and once engaged with the threat; to destroy, neutralize, or
suppress the enemy.
The following folio of material highlights the many subsequent historical and
critical missions performed by members of the 2nd Combat Brigade Team, whose
actions, operations and the many critical issues resolved over its 82 year
history to meet the changing threat and the honors they achieved are
